Should people who don’t recycle have to pay a fine of
$50?
My opinion on this topic is yes I think should have
to.
Hi my name is Nathan and I want to talk to you about
this topic.
My first point is that each New Zealander consumes
about 36kg of plastic packaging per year and only recycles 8.64kg. That’s a lot
plastic that goes to landfills and remember plastic packaging hardly weighs
anything! People really need to start recycling or even reusing and a good
thing to do make people start recycling is to make them lose some of their
“precious” money if they don’t recycle. People don’t like losing money (it’s a
different thing to give it away) and if they have to recycle to keep it they
are probably going want to recycle.
My second point is it saves a lot of trees if you
recycle paper. You might say “how is that going to save trees?” so I am going to
tell you.
Paper is made out of trees as you probably know and when you recycle
paper they can make new paper out of the old paper (just make sure that it is
flat and not crumpled up) and they don’t have to cut down as many trees.
Here are some facts that you probably don’t know-for
every 1 tonne of paper recycled, 13 trees are saved, 31,780 litres of water is
saved, 2.5 barrels of oil is saved, 4 cubic yards of landfill space is saved,
4,100 kWs of electricity is saved and making paper from recycled materials
results in 74% less air pollution and 35% less air pollution.
That is why I think people should get a fine of $50 if
they don’t recycle but you might think the opposite. Thank you for listening.
:)
